Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when numerous of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
Since January, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a approach that remains especially affected by weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that these practices become not financially viable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
