Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Displacement Reported

The island nation has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Authorities stated that the massive storm triggered extensive sudden floods, storm surges, landslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, prompting the relocation of millions of residents across the country.

Widespread Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews documented rising waters climbing to rooftop levels and residences washed out by strong flows.

Our team saved 14 individuals stranded on the roof surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident also called in panic, reporting the roof of his house was about to be ripped off by the wind. We saved him and four relatives.”

By Monday, authorities announced two fatalities: one from drowning on the island and a second individual who died after her home gave way on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The intense storm was downgraded to a typhoon early Monday as it crossed the main island, where the capital is located.

According to the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is projected to lose strength as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service stated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck shortly following another severe storm, that claimed at least 224 people with another 135 missing prior to advancing to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for those still missing were halted recently due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

Global warming is causing cyclones more intense and common. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Scientists have found that the frequency of intense cyclones striking the islands has risen doubled over the last two decades.

International estimates indicate that intense storms cause approximately US$3.5 million in damage for the Philippines every year.

The nation’s leader declared a state of emergency on Thursday due to the extensive devastation from the prior typhoon and the expected damage from the new storm.
