Approximately fifty cars have been marked with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.

Automobiles, building surfaces and postboxes were vandalized, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they stated in a official communication.

Officers say they were contacted late on Wednesday night, when a resident observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued fluid.

The substance had been drawn in the pattern of a banned symbol, they added.

Officers then found many other smeared cars and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.

Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under laws banning the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.

Police say initial examinations indicate the substance was probably human bodily fluid.

"Currently there is no clue as to its origin; officials are presently not informed of any injuries in association with the incident," they added.

Municipal representatives said they were trying "to solve the mystery" and have requested to the residents for tips.

An important representative commented the vandalism made him without words and had to be addressed promptly.

"This incident strikes at the center of Hanau and revives the trauma of the right-wing terrorist attack five years ago," he wrote on online, recalling the death of nine people by a shooter targeting residents of foreign heritage in five years prior.
